German soldiers serving in the hot climate of North Africa wore lightweight pith helmets constructed from cotton and cork. This helmet provided no ballistic protection, but instead shielded the wearer from the sun. SGT Leroy N. Stewart, Company K, 26th Infantry Regiment, brought this captured example home as a souvenir.
