This is a reproduction of Army Chaplain Colonel, then Captain, Wesley Geary’s slingshot “Big Bertha.” Geary carried a similar Bertha with him during his tour in Vietnam from 1966-1967 created by a fellow 2nd Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment officer. According to Geary, the original Bertha creator “thought I needed some protection, and as a student of the Bible, the story of David and Goliath came to mind. He thought it would be a symbol that the Lord was with us as we battled the VC in the jungles of Vietnam. The troops took to the story immediately “. . . It became a conversation piece and the soldiers felt good when I came with them carrying my slingshot in my medical pouch. I shot beetle-nuts at the soldiers when they did bad things, like swearing or purchasing beer from the ladies and children who sold local beer to the soldiers. I also collected small religious ‘fines’ from soldiers I caught gambling. The slingshot became a part of my ministry and I continued to carry it during my tour.” Unfortunately, the original was broken in 1967, but two copies were created—this one in 2012 by Seargent Utterback and another which Geary gave to the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment as they deployed for Iraq in 2007.
