Sergeant Ronald Campsey, Company D, 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment wore this helmet in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. During a firefight in May 1968, a bullet blasted through the crown of the helmet. Campsey didn’t realize the helmet had been hit until after the battle. When he tried to use the helmet as a seat he was poked in the rear by the outward-splayed steel at the exit hole. It could have ended differently. Just the day before, SGT Campsey had adjusted the liner to raise the helmet for better vision. That act likely saved his life.
