Assault jacket issued to soldiers in the 1st Infantry Division in preparation for the Normandy invasion. The jacket was intended to replace the haversack and allow troops to carry additional ammunition and grenades in quick access pockets. They did not function well. They were hot, awkward and heavy when waterlogged. Most were discarded by troops during or shortly after the invasion.
