Artillery shells were the preferred method to disperse poison gas. German ‘Blue Cross’ shells contained glass bottles like this filled with fine arsenic dust. Once dispersed, the dust penetrated an enemy’s gas mask, causing uncontrollable coughing and forcing him to remove it. With his mask removed he would succumb to other lethal chemical agents.
