Captain John Finke, commander of Company F, 16th Infantry Regiment, was wearing this helmet when it was pierced by a bullet during the battle for Troina, Sicily on August 3rd, 1943. Although wounded, Finke stayed with his men all day, refusing medical evacuation until late in the afternoon. He received the Distinguished Service Cross for his heroic actions that day.
